French press grind size: coarse

A French press uses the coarsest hot-brew grind. It steeps the full four minutes, so a coarse grind keeps it from turning bitter or muddy.

Not built for French press: Baratza Sette 270, Breville Barista Express (built-in grinder).

If your French press tastes wrong

It tastesWhyDo this
Sour, thin, sharpUnder-extracted: grind too coarse or steep too shortGo 2 to 3 steps finer, or add 30 to 60 seconds of steep time
Bitter, dry, harsh finishOver-extracted: grind too fine or steep too longGo 2 to 3 steps coarser, or cut 30 seconds of steep time
Muddy, silty cupToo many fines for a metal filterGo coarser and pour gently off the top of the grounds
Weak but not sourNot enough coffee for the waterTighten the ratio: use 1 to 2 more grams per 250 g of water

Fix the beans too

Fresh beans hold a grind setting.

Coffee changes as it ages, so a setting that works on day 10 drifts by day 40. A subscription keeps the beans in the window.

We may earn a commission if you buy through these links. It never changes the settings we publish.
