Pour over

Pour Over Ratio Calculator

Pour over rewards precision. A 1:16 ratio with a medium grind and a slow, even pour gives a clean, bright cup. Bloom the grounds with twice their weight in water for 30 seconds before the main pour.

Brew it better

The ratio is free. The taste comes from fresh beans and a consistent grind. Here is what we actually use.

How to use it

  1. 01

    Set your water

Enter your water. A single mug pour over is around 300 to 350 grams; a larger brew is 500.

  2. 02

    Choose your ratio

Start at 1:16, adjust by half-steps to taste.

  3. 03

    Bloom and pour

Weigh the coffee shown, grind medium, bloom 30 seconds, then pour slowly in circles.

Frequently asked

1:16 is the standard for pour over. Tune in half-step increments: 1:15 for more body, 1:17 for a lighter, more tea-like cup. Adjust grind before ratio if it tastes off.

Pour twice the coffee weight in water at the start (about 30 to 40 grams for an 18 gram dose), wait 30 to 45 seconds while it degasses, then continue pouring in slow circles.

Medium, like table salt. If it drains too fast and tastes weak, go finer. If it stalls and tastes bitter, go coarser. Consistent grind from a burr grinder matters more than the exact setting.
